Bulldogs Fall at No. 19 Denver, 17-7, in Sunday GWLL Action

Denver used a hot start Sunday to down visiting Butler, 17-7, in a Great Western Lacrosse League contest in Colorado. The No. 19 Pioneers scored eight of the game's first nine goals and continued on for the win. For Butler, freshman Grant Albertson had three goals and classmate Cliff Smith added two. With the win, Denver improves to 8-4 (3-0 GWLL), while Butler falls to 4-7 (0-4).

Twelve Pioneers scored goals Sunday, with no player finding the net more than twice. Ryan Zordani led Denver with four points on a goal and three assists. The Pioneers out-shot the Bulldogs, 46-27, and had a 52-31 advantage in ground balls.

Albertson's three goals push his team-leading season total to 19. Smith fired a game-high six shots and added an assist for Butler. Nick Vosburgh and Ryan Carter had the other two Butler scores. Freshman Jason Donati had a team-high two assists. Butler won 14 of 26 face-offs, including a 10-of-19 performance from junior Phil Brauch, who also had an assist.

Senior Sam Ashley got the start in goal and took the loss, despite making 11 saves. Ryan Kaiser came in for the final 10 minutes of the game. Junior captain Steve Forsythe had a game-high six ground balls.

Jeb Hollingsworth got the win for Denver, allowing three goals in 49 minutes of action. He made nine saves. Brian Pirot relieved him and Butler scored four goals in the game's waning minutes.
 

 

The Bulldogs return to Indianapolis for the season finale Friday at 4 p.m. against GWLL opponent Fairfield. The game will be played at Varsity Field on campus.
