Albertson Scores Four Times in Saturday Loss to Ohio State

April 9, 2005

Box Score

Freshman Grant Albertson netted four goals to lead the Butler effort in a physical 13-9 loss to Ohio State Saturday in Great Western Lacrosse League action at the Butler Bowl in Indianapolis. The Buckeyes used the first four goals of the second half to take an 11-4 lead, which proved to be too much as a late Butler rally fell short. With the win, Ohio State improves to 3-5 (1-0 GWLL), while the Bulldogs fall to 4-4 (0-2).

The loss to the defending GWLL champions ended Butler's two-game winning streak and was the team's first home loss of the season. Rookie Cliff Smith had two goals for Butler, while Nick Vosburgh, Kyle Tietjen and Phil Brauch each added a goal.

Ohio State opened the scoring with a goal at the 6:36 mark of the first period before Albertson scored his first goal of the day to answer 26 seconds later. Ohio State then rattled off six of the next seven goals to take a 7-2 lead with 11:51 to play in the second period. The Bulldogs held the Buckeyes scoreless for the rest of the half and got goals from Smith and Albertson to pull within a 7-4 margin at the half.

OSU held the Bulldogs scoreless for nearly the first 18 minutes of the second half and scored the frame's first four goals to take an 11-4 lead with 14:32 to play in the game. Butler fought back by scoring five of the game's final seven goals, but it wasn't enough as the Buckeyes posted a 13-9 win.

The game was physical, leading to 13 penalties, including three for unnecessary roughness. Each team took advantage of two extra-man opportunities with the Bulldogs going 2-of-9 and OSU converting 2-of-4.

Redshirt freshman Mike Rimmer made 16 saves in goal for the Buckeyes to take the win. For Butler, sophomore Ryan Kaiser got the start before being relieved by senior Sam Ashley. Kaiser took the loss, as the two combined to make 10 saves on the afternoon.

Butler actually out-shot the Buckeyes, 40-33, mainly due to the Bulldogs' 18 rips in the fourth period. Ohio State had 43 ground balls to 30 for the home team. Butler won 13 of the game's 25 face-offs.

Senior Anthony Crimmins and freshman Jason Donati each had two assists for Butler with Vosburgh adding one as well. Vosburgh also had a team-high four ground balls.

For Ohio State, Kyle Olson led the way with four goals and Craig Nolan had two. Jeff Schneider had a game-high six ground balls.

The Bulldogs return to action Sunday (April 17) with a non-league contest at Princeton. The team has just one home game remaining, the season finale April 29 against GWLL foe Fairfield.
