Bulldogs Escape With 8-7 Victory Over Fairfield
March 30, 2003 INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler lacrosse team held off a fourth quarter surge from Fairfield to escape with an 8-7 win over the Stags in the teams' Great Western Lacrosse League opener on Saturday afternoon at the Butler Bowl. The Bulldogs led 7-3 entering the final period, but the Stags scored four straight unanswered goals to knot the game at 7 with 8:29 remaining. But, Kyle Tietjen's man-up goal off Ryan Ward's assist gave the Bulldogs the go-ahead goal and Butler managed to hold on for the league victory. The win lifts the Bulldogs to 4-4 on the season, while the Stags drop to 4-3 overall. The Bulldogs scored the first two goals of the game, as Ward connected off of a Dan McDonnell assist and Rich Pavlick converted a Dan Torgersen helper within the first four minutes of the game. Neither team scored again until the final thirty seconds of the period, when Rory McCarthy found the back of the net off of Garrett Bamann's pass. Butler's Doug Mathias quickly answered, though, scoring off a Pavlick assist to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 first quarter lead. Matt Buecker scored at 9:23 in the second quarter to cut Fairfield's gap to 3-2, but Pavlick sent the Bulldogs into halftime with a 4-2 advantage by scoring with two seconds remaining in the quarter. Pavlick began the third quarter where he left off, scoring back-to-back goals to give Butler a 6-2 lead. McCarthy scored at 6:49 off an assist by Buecker, but Pavlick responded with his career-high fifth goal of the afternoon, propelling the Bulldogs to a 7-3 lead heading into the final stanza. Brendan Winkler led Butler defensively, collecting 15 saves on the afternoon. His counterpart, C.J. Kemp, finished with 13 saves in the cage. The final score reflected on how evenly matched the teams were, as each team tallied 31 shots, and Butler held a slim 32-28 edge on groundballs. Butler will host Wheeling Jesuit in a non-conference battle on Saturday (April 5) at the Butler Bowl.
