No. 9 Notre Dame Tops Butler, 22-6, Saturday

Ninth-ranked Notre Dame scored the first 12 goals of the game and went on to a 22-6 win over visiting Butler Saturday in the Great Western Lacrosse League opener for both squads. Senior Kyle Tietjen scored three goals for Butler and freshman Grant Albertson had two goals and three assists. Notre Dame, which chose to play the game at the team's indoor facility, improves 3-1 on the season, while Butler falls to 2-3.

The Fighting Irish fired 68 shots on the afternoon and won 19 of 30 face-offs. The Bulldogs committed 12 penalties that gave the Irish 11 extra-man opportunities. Notre Dame converted on six of those.

Tietjen broke Notre Dame's game-opening scoring streak with a goal at the 5:09 mark in the second quarter. It was his first of three goals on the afternoon to push his season total to five. Butler scored three of the last four goals of the first half, but still went into the intermission with a deficit of 13-3.

Ken Ormsby scored his first goal of the season top open the fourth period. Junior Phil Brauch picked up an assist on Albertson's first goal of the afternoon. Senior Sam Ashley got the start in goal and took the loss. Back-up netminders Ryan Kaiser and Ryan Beattie also saw action in the contest.
 

 

Matt Karweck had five goals and three assists to lead the Irish. Pat Walsh and Jim Morrison each added three scores.

The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday, March 30 when the team hosts Bellarmine at Varsity Field. The face-off is set for 4 p.m.
