Sept. 20, 2002 GOLF MARATHON: Butler's well-rested men's golf squad will end a two-week layoff with back-to-back tournaments. The Bulldogs face 90 holes of golf over a four-day period, beginning with the Ball State Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 21-22. The 36-hole tournament will be played at The Players Club in Yorktown beginning at 8 a.m., each day. Following the Ball State Invitational, the Bulldogs will turn right around and host their own 10-team, Butler Fall Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 23-24. The 54-hole Butler tournament will be played at Eagle Creek Golf Course in Indianapolis. A year ago, the Bulldogs placed third at the Ball State Invitational and eighth at the Butler Fall Invitational. OPENING ROUND: Butler opened its 2002 fall schedule on Sept. 3, with a tie for seventh place at the 13-team University of Indianapolis Men's Golf Invitational. The Bulldogs shot a team score of 310 to tie with Dayton, ten strokes behind tournament champ Indiana Wesleyan. Senior Jeff Chapman (Noblesville) led the Bulldogs with a 75, while senior Mitch Foss (Dunlap, Ill.) carded a 76. Senior Michael Heston (Westerville, Ohio) shot a 70 and freshman Will Turner (Auburn) posted a 74 as non-scoring team members. LEAGUE HONOR: Senior Michael Heston was named the first Horizon League Men's Golf "Athlete of the Week" following Butler's season-opening tournament at the University of Indianapolis. Heston, playing as a non-scoring member of the team, tied for first in the meet with a two-under-par 70. He missed taking medalist honors when Kyle Chin of Indiana Wesleyan carded an eagle on the first playoff hole. Heston joined Chin and David Slater of Indiana Wesleyan (71) as the lone players in the meet to break par. |
