Butler Third After Opening Round Of Greg Palmer Eagle Classic

April 12, 2004

Senior Colin Christie shot an opening round, one-under-par 71 to move into second place in the individual standings and help Butler to a third place team standing after the first day of the Greg Palmer Eagle Classic at Eagle Trace Golf Club in Morehead, Ky., on Monday, April 12. Rain forced postponement of the tournament's second round on Monday. The 12-team meet will conclude with a single, 18-hole round on Tuesday, April 13.

Christie shot a 35 on the front nine and then came back with a 36 on the back nine for his opening day total. He was one of just two golfers to break par, and he'll enter the final round two strokes behind individual leader Jamie Frazier of Murray State.

Butler senior Jonathan Novak also placed among the "Top 20" individuals after the first round. Novak carded a 77 to tie for 13th. Rounding out Butler's five-player scoring team were sophomore Will Turner (80), senior Jeff Chapman (83) and freshman Chris Spitler (84). Sophomore Trey Server, playing as a non-scoring individual, posted an 85.

Host Morehead State and Murray State shared the first day lead with a team score of 10-over-par 298, while Butler finished the opening round with a 311, one stroke ahead of Cleveland State and Western Illinois. Eight of the 12 teams in the field shot 315 or better in the opening round.
