Butler's Matt McCanna Earns PFL Honor

Oct. 4, 2004

Sophomore Matt McCanna was named Pioneer Football League Co-Special Teams Player of the Week following the games played on Saturday, Oct. 2. He's the first Butler player to be honored by the league this fall.

McCanna provided the margin of victory in the Bulldogs' 21-14 Homecoming win over Austin Peay. He gave Butler a 21-7 lead with a 66-yard punt return for a touchdown early in the third quarter and that score proved to be the game-winner. It was his first career punt return for a score and his second collegiate touchdown. It also was Butler's first punt return for a touchdown since 2002.

A second-year wide receiver from Cicero (Hamilton Heights), McCanna finished with two punt returns for 68 yards in the win. He also had two pass receptions for a career-best 68 yards, including a career-long 37 yard catch.

McCanna shared the league's weekly honor with Doug Jones of Dayton. Jones recovered a muffed punt return in the end zone for a touchdown, and he had a blocked PAT attempt in Dayton's victory over Davidson.
