April 17, 2002 Seniors Thomas Jackson (East Lansing, Mich.), Brandon Currie (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Allison Cox (North Judson) captured the top male and female athletic awards at Butler University's annual all-sports banquet held at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Wednesday, April 17. The year-ending event was held to pay tribute to Butler's 19 athletic teams and included the presentation of most valuable player and mental attitude awards, plus several special recognition and scholarship awards, to Butler's student-athletes. Jackson, who helped lead Butler's men's basketball team to four consecutive 20-win seasons and four straight post-season tournament appearances, was named a co-winner of Butler's Outstanding Male Athlete award. He finished his Butler career as the Bulldogs' all-time leader in both assists and steals, and he became the first player in Butler basketball history to record both 1,000 career points and 500 career assists. He was a two-time all-conference performer, and he was named Butler's most valuable player this season. Currie is wrapping up his career as the most successful tennis player in Butler history. A three-time all-conference performer, he was named league "Player of the Year" as both a sophomore and junior, after being named conference "Newcomer of the Year" as a freshman. He holds Butler's single season record for wins, and he'll complete his senior season as Butler's all-time leader in singles' victories. Cox, who capped off a stellar, four-year career with the Bulldogs last fall, played in every Butler volleyball match in the last three years. She finished her career in tenth place on Butler's all-time list for kills and in ninth place on the school's all-time list for digs. She ranked second in the conference in digs and 10th in kills last fall. Cox was named to several all-tournament teams, and she was picked to the Horizon League's Academic All-Conference squad. Juniors Brandon Miller (New Castle) Michael Mariscalco (Dayton, Ohio), Keely Norris (Indianapolis) and Hadiatu Dumbuya (Fairfield, Ohio) were named recipients of the Paul D. "Tony" Hinkle Scholarship for outstanding athletic achievement. Miller was the third-leading scorer on Butler's successful men's basketball team, while Mariscalco was the second-leading scorer on Butler's conference champion men's soccer team. Norris was the most valuable player on Butler's volleyball squad, while Dumbuya earned all-conference honors for the third straight year as a member of Butler's women's soccer team. Juniors Scott Walker (Upper Arlington, Ohio) and Andrea Keech (Morris, Ill.) received Helen Tewksbury Awards for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and athletics. Walker is the second-leading scorer on Butler's lacrosse team, while Keech is one of the top hitters on Butler's softball team. Both have been named to the Butler Athletic Director's Academic Honor Roll. Juniors Mitch Foss (Dunlap, Ill.) and Amy Morrison (Plano, Texas) were named recipients of a $1,000 Dean Herbert F. Schwomeyer Scholarship, presented for outstanding athletic and academic achievement. Foss is a two-time all-conference golfer, while Morrison is the leading scorer on Butler's women's soccer team. Both athletes are Academic All-Conference and Academic All-District performers. The Frank "Pop" Hedden Award, which honors Butler's outstanding male and female freshman student-athletes was presented to men's soccer player Andy Pancio (St. Peter's, Mo.) and women's basketball player Maria Marchesano (Ft. Wayne). |
