Bulldogs Close Out Regular Season At Home

May 18, 2004

FINAL WEEK: Butler will close out the 2004 regular season with five games in five days, including a season-ending, four-game Horizon League series at Bulldog Park. The Bulldogs will play a non-league contest at Miami, Ohio, on Wednesday, May 19, at 3 p.m. (EDT). That game was a late addition to Butler's schedule. Head coach Steve Farley's squad then will wrap up the regular season with a four-game set at home against Cleveland State, beginning with a single game on Friday, May 21, at 3 p.m. The two Horizon League foes will play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 22, starting at 12 noon, and then conclude the regular season with a single game on Sunday, May 23. Butler's senior players will be honored prior to the Sunday game, which starts at 12 noon.

TITLE CHASE: The final weekend of Horizon League play figures to be one of the most exciting in recent memory. None of the teams has clinched a spot in the final league standings, and just two games separate the second place team from the sixth place team! UIC (33-18) is leading the league with a 13-7 record, while Cleveland State (14-28) stands second at 10-9. Butler (24-26) is third at 10-10, followed by Wright State (22-31) at 10-11, UW-Milwaukee (22-27) at 9-10, Detroit (17-34) at 9-11 and Youngstown State (18-28) at 7-10. UIC closes the season with a four-game series at Detroit, while Youngstown State finishes with four games at UW-Milwaukee.

EFFICIENT WEEKEND: Sophomore right-hander Patrick Feeney pitched in two of Butler's four games at Wright State and came away with a victory and a save. He tossed four shutout innings in relief and earned the win in Butler's 13-inning, 8-6, victory over the Raiders in the series' opener, and then he threw two shutout innings to earn a save in the Bulldogs' 6-3 final game decision. He allowed just two hits and had five strikeouts in the six innings of work.

BULLDOG BITS: Junior Dale Mueller tied Butler's single game record for hits for the second time in his career when he chalked up five hits in the Bulldogs' 13-inning game at Wright State. It was exactly 364 days after he had posted a five-hit performance against Detroit. Seven different Butler players have had five hits in a game, including current assistant coach Luke Murphy... Sophomore Luke Behning added to his school record for saves when he picked up his seventh save of the season in Butler's 13-6 win at Wright State. Behning leads the Horizon League in saves...Sophomore Craig Costello is tied for the Horizon League lead in pitching victories with an 8-4 record. He was the winning pitcher in Butler's non-league victory over IPFW (8-5) and he picked up the win in Butler's 6-3 decision at Wright State last week.
