Butler's Jared Lowe, Aaron Phillips Named Horizon League Players of the Week
May 12, 2003 Seniors Jared Lowe and Aaron Phillips were tabbed as the Horizon League's top baseball performers during the week of May 5 for their efforts in Butler's four-game series at Cleveland State. Lowe, who batted .733 in the league series, was named "Player of the Week" for the first time this season, while Phillips, who picked up his fourth win of the season, was cited as the league's "Pitcher of the Week." Lowe put on an impressive offensive performance while helping the Bulldogs win three of the four games in Cleveland. He had 11 hits in the four games, including three doubles and two home runs. He drove in nine runs in the series and scored seven more! The Butler shortstop opened the Cleveland State series with a double and a run scored in the Bulldogs' 3-1 victory. He had two hits in two official trips to the plate in the contest that the Bulldogs dropped, 5-2, and then came back with back-to-back, 4-for-5 performances to close out the series. He had two doubles, three runs batted in and three runs scored in Butler's 15-2 win and then finished with two home runs, five RBI's and three runs scored in the Bulldogs' 7-5 victory in the final game of the four-game set! The four-game effort boosted Lowe's batting average to .382 and moved him into second place in the Horizon League in hitting! Phillips recorded his sixth complete game of the season in the series' opener. He allowed just one earned run on seven hits and blanked the Vikings over the final four innings of the nine-inning contest. Butler's ace had seven strikeouts and three walks in the game. The Bulldogs' right-hander enters the final week of the regular season in second place in the Horizon League in complete games. He ranks fourth in the league in innings pitched (79.0) and opponents' batting average (.243), seventh in earned run average (3.08) and eighth in strikeouts (53). Butler will close out the regular season at home with a four-game series against Horizon League foe Detroit, beginning on Friday, May 16. |
