Five Butler Baseball Players Named To Academic All-District Team

May 9, 2002

Smart play has helped Butler University's baseball squad to a 26-17 record, and smart players helped the Bulldogs dominate the 2002 Verizon/CoSIDA District V All-Academic baseball team. Butler placed a district high five players on the honor squad, which represents Division I schools from Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ontario and Manitoba.

Selected to the District V All-Academic team from Butler were seniors Jeff Steele and John Corcoran and juniors Tim Marks, Paul Beck and Jeff Albert. Notre Dame and Ball State each placed two players on the squad, while Illinois and Minnesota each had one selection. The 11 District V honorees, who were chosen by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America), will join all-academic picks from seven other districts as nominees for the 2002 Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America Team, which will be announced early next month.

Steele, an infielder-outfielder from South Bend, was named to the District V All-Academic team for the second consecutive year. The versatile player, who boasts a .300 career batting average, owns a 3.94 grade point average as a chemistry/pre-med major. He's already been accepted to med school for next year.

Corcoran is currently enjoying one of the finest seasons ever compiled by a Butler pitcher. The righthanded hurler from Minooka, Ill., has won nine consecutive games and has tied the school single season record for wins with a 10-1 overall record. He pitched three consecutive shutouts earlier this spring and compiled 31 straight scoreless innings. He's a secondary education major with a 3.26 grade point average.

Marks, a catcher from Herscher, Ill., has emerged as an offensive leader for the Bulldogs with a .337 batting average. He's also put up big numbers in the classroom with a 3.74 grade point average as a biology major. Likewise for Beck, a designated hitter/first baseman from Findlay, Ohio. He boasts a .344 batting average with five home runs and 30 runs batted in, and a 3.51 grade point average as a marketing major. Albert, a third baseman in his first season after transferring from Rochester Institute of Technology, has excelled on the field with a .340 batting average and in the classroom with a 3.66 grade point average as a finance major.

All five Butler players were named to the Butler Athletic Director's Academic Honor Roll earlier this year.
