Two Butler Baseball Players Named To Academic All-District Team

May 8, 2003

Seniors Tim Marks and Paul Beck have been named to the 2003 Verizon/CoSIDA District V All-Academic baseball team, chosen by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). The two were selected to the honor squad, which represents Division I schools from Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ontario and Manitoba, for the second consecutive year.

Marks, who hails from Herscher, Ill., is one of the top catchers in the Horizon League. He's batting .280 with two home runs and 20 runs batted in for the 25-22 Bulldogs. A starter in 84 games over the past two seasons, he led the Bulldogs in putouts a year ago and currently ranks second on the team in putouts. Equally accomplished in the classroom as a biology major, Marks was picked to the academic all-conference team, the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll and the Butler Athletic Director's Academic Honor Roll a year ago.

Beck, a designated hitter/first baseman from Findlay, Ohio, leads the Bulldogs in runs batted in with 26 and stands second on the team in home runs with five. He has a team-high 42 starts this season, and he's tied for third on the team in total hits with 43. A marketing major, Beck was named to the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll and the Butler Athletic Director's Academic Honor Roll last season.

Ball State led the 11-player District V All-Academic Team with three players selected, while Butler and Notre Dame each placed two players on the honor squad.

The 11 District V honorees will join all-academic picks from seven other districts as nominees for the 2003 Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America Team, which will be announced early next month.
