Craig Costello Named Horizon League Pitcher of the Week

April 12, 2004

Butler sophomore Craig Costello, who tossed the sixth no-hitter in Butler baseball history to lead the Bulldogs to a league victory over UW-Milwaukee, has been named Horizon League Pitcher of the Week. He's the second Butler pitcher to be honored by the Horizon League this spring, joining teammate Randy Miles who was cited on March 29.

Costello held the Panthers hitless, while picking up a complete-game, 2-0 victory in the first game of a league doubleheader on Saturday, April 10. He faced just 24 batters in the seven-inning contest, and he didn't allow a UW-Milwaukee runner beyond first base. The Butler lefthander had 10 strikeouts, including six straight at one stretch, and just three walks, while improving to 4-2 on the year. It was his second collegiate complete game performance.

The no-hitter was Butler's first since March 24, 2002, when Aaron Phillips turned the trick against IPFW. It was Butler's second no-hitter in Horizon League play, following Steve Magill's gem against Wright State on April 4, 1999.

Costello currently stands fourth on Butler's team with a 3.08 earned run average, and he's second on the squad with 29 strikeouts. He owns one of Butler's two shutouts this spring.
