Baseball - Weekly Notes
April 3, 2002 THIS WEEK: The Bulldogs, riding a six-game winning streak, will open play in the Horizon League with a four-game series at Wright State beginning on Friday, April 5. The two league foes will square off at Nischwitz Field on the Wright State campus in a single, nine-inning game at 6:30 p.m. (EDT), on Friday, and then will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 6, beginning at 12 noon. The final game of the series is slated for 1 p.m., on Sunday, April 7. GRAND SLAM: Butler won four games in three days with a three-game, home sweep of Chicago State and an away game victory over Dayton and climbed to 14-8 on the season. The Bulldogs defeated Chicago State, 10-3 and 6-0, in a doubleheader and then posted a 12-0 victory over the Cougars in the final game of the three-game set. Head coach Steve Farley then took his squad to Dayton, Ohio, for a game that was a late addition to the schedule, and the Bulldogs pulled out a 7-6, come-from-behind victory over the Flyers. The four wins extended Butler's winning streak to six straight games and gave the Bulldogs nine victories in their last ten outings. EASTER EGGS: Senior John Corcoran (Minooka, Ill.) was on the mound for Butler's Easter Sunday game against Chicago State, and he made sure the scoreboard was decorated with numerous "egg-shaped" numbers. Corcoran tossed his second consecutive shutout and picked up his fourth straight win with a 12-0 blanking of the Cougars. He had 11 strikeouts and just two walks, while giving up just six hits in the contest. The Butler righthander faced just 32 batters, and only one Chicago State runner advanced as far as second base. The win boosted Corcoran to 5-1 on the season, and earned him Horizon League "Pitcher of the Week" honors. John Corcoran has pitched 23 consecutive scoreless innings. HEAR THE SIZZLE: Junior third baseman Jeff Albert (Rochester, N.Y.) had Butler's hottest bat in the Bulldogs' victories over Chicago State and Dayton. The transfer from Rochester Institute of Technology had seven hits in 11 trips (.636) to the plate in the four games and raised his season batting average to .366. He scored three runs and drove in three more. The first-year Butler player also belted his first home run of the season in the Bulldogs' 10-3 win over Chicago State. BULLDOG BITS: Sophomore Ryan Nance (Frankfort) sparked a four-run rally in the ninth inning at Dayton with a three-run, home run. The late blitz helped Butler overcome a 6-3 deficit and pick up the one-run victory. It was the fourth home run of the season for Nance, and his second in three days. He currently leads the Bulldogs in hitting with a .418 average...Junior Jared Lowe (Indianapolis) had seven hits and six runs scored in Butler's four wins over Chicago State and Dayton. He had a pair of triples in Butler's 10-3 win over Chicago State, and he scored the winning run in the Bulldogs' victory over Dayton... Sophomore Ryan Chenoweth (Indianapolis) and freshman Jon Olson (Kenosha, Wis.) combined for a shutout in Butler's 6-0 win over Chicago State. Chenoweth pitched the first four innings of the seven-inning game and earned his first win of the season, while Olson picked up his first career save. |
