Butler Falls At Indiana State, 7-0

Five Indiana State pitchers combined to hurl a five-hit shutout and lead the host Sycamores to a 7-0 victory over Butler in a non-league contest at Sycamore Field in Terre Haute on Tuesday, May 16. The victory lifted Indiana State to 20-31 on the season, while Butler dropped its fourth straight game and fell to 17-31.

Sophomore righthanded pitcher Chad Dawson (2-6) threw the first five innings for the Sycamores and blanked the Bulldogs on two hits. He was followed in turn by Adam Tyler, Nathan Inman, Josh Varno and Brian Omogrosso, each pitching one shutout inning. The five Indiana State hurlers combined for eight strikeouts and just three walks.

Indiana State jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Bond and a run-scoring single by Marcus Artner. The Sycamores added a single run in the third inning on another run-scoring single by Artner and then exploded for four runs in the fourth inning. Dan Caudle sparked the rally with a two-run home run.

Senior Stephen Gill and junior Tony Barnes each had two hits for the Bulldogs, while junior Dustin Bucalo picked up the other Butler hit. The Bulldogs' five hits came in five different innings.

Sophomore Brian Deter pitched the first inning for the Bulldogs and suffered the loss. He surrendered two runs on three hits. The Sycamores tagged four other Butler pitchers for ten more hits.

Butler will play its final non-league game on Wednesday, May 17, at IPFW. That contest in Fort Wayne is slated for 1 p.m.
