Brothers Jason and Jon Freeman combined for five hits, four runs and three runs batted in to lead Butler to an 11-5 victory over host Chicago State in a non-league game at Cougar Field in Chicago on Tuesday, April 29. The victory lifted Butler to 25-22 on the season, while the Cougars fell to 6-34. Jason Freeman sparked Butler's offense with three hits in five trips to the plate. He scored one run and drove in another. Jon Freeman had two hits in two official trips, scored three runs and drove in a pair. The Bulldogs also picked up multiple-hit games from freshmen Mike Rosen and Justin McKinley, each of whom added a pair of hits. Rosen had the Bulldogs' lone extra base hit in the contest with a double. Butler head coach Steve Farley rested several of his regulars in the contest and used five different pitchers against the Cougars. Freshman Craig Costello pitched the first three innings and picked up his third win in five decisions. The Bulldogs jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but Chicago State bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the second inning to tie the contest. Butler then took control with three-run rallies in the third and fourth innings. Butler will take several days off for final exams before returning to Horizon League play with a four-game series at Cleveland State, May 9-11. |
