Butler Splits Twinbill At Samford

March 19, 2005

Box Score

Joe Dempsey ignited a three-run rally in the eighth inning to lead Butler to a 6-3 victory over host Samford in the first game of a doubleheader at Joe Lee Griffin Field on Saturday, March 19. Samford rebounded with a 3-2 victory in the nightcap. The split left Butler with a 3-11 record on the season, while Samford ended the day at 4-11.

Dempsey singled to lead off the eighth inning of the opening game and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stephen Gill. Clayton Deeb grounded out to second base and Joe Pauley walked, before catcher Brandon Tormoehlen lined a single to right field. Dempsey scored and Pauley crossed the plate when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. Tormoehlen later scored on a fielder's choice by Jonathan Day.

Freshman Jon Dages, who entered the game in relief of starter Craig Costello, blanked Samford over the final two innings to pick up his second collegiate victory. Dages pitched four and two-thirds shutout innings, allowing just two hits.

Day led Butler's offensive attack with three hits and two RBIs. Senior Matt Martino added a pair of hits.

Dempsey drove in a run and scored a run in the second game, but Samford tallied a single run on two hits in the bottom of the ninth inning to break a 2-2 tie and earn a split on the day. Sophomore Matt Byzet suffered the loss for Butler. Freshman Brian Deter pitched seven solid innings as Butler's starter, allowing two runs on eight hits.
