Butler Looks To Defend Titles At Horizon League Championship

Oct. 29, 2004

Butler will be looking to continue a pair of championship streaks when the first 2004-05 Horizon League titles are decided in Kenosha, Wis., this weekend. The defending champion Bulldogs will join eight other league schools at the 2004 Horizon League Men's and Women's Cross Country Championship at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday, Oct. 30.

All nine Horizon League members will compete in the women?s 5K championship on UW-Parkside's National Cross Country Course at 11 a.m. Eight of the nine members will compete for the men's title in an 8K race starting at 12 noon.

Butler won a sixth straight men's cross country championship a year ago. Senior Olly Laws won the league individual crown, and he returns to lead a Butler team that features five returning all-league performers! Seniors Nick Goodliffe and Tom Frazer both earned first team all-league recognition at last year's meet, while seniors John Frazer and Andrew Sherman were second team picks. All five finished among the league's top 11 individuals.

The Butler women captured a second consecutive title behind individual champ Becky Lyne, who wrapped up her eligibility last fall. Head coach Joe Franklin does have two all-league performers on hand, and he's added senior Victoria Mitchell, who was named Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year last spring. Senior Monika Schneider earned first team all-league honors at last year's championship, while junior Katie Stuckey was a second team pick.

Franklin was named league Coach of the Year in both men's cross country and women's cross country last fall.

Butler's men are ranked 14th in the NCAA Divison I heading into the league championship, while the Butler women will take a No. 29 national ranking to the league meet.
