Victoria Mitchell Runs Fastest Steeplechase Time In U.S.

May 24, 2005

Butler senior Victoria Mitchell established herself as the runner to beat at this year's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship by posting the fastest collegiate steeplechase time this spring at the Minnesota Distance Invitational on Saturday, May 21. The meet at Macalester College was a final warm-up for Mitchell prior to the NCAA Mideast Regional in Bloomington,Ind., May 27-28.

Mitchell placed second in the elite 3,000 meter steeplechase field at the Minnesota meet with a Butler school-record time of 9:53.24, 13 seconds better than the previous NCAA best time this spring. She was just under four seconds behind winner Briana Shook, the American record-holder in the event. The race produced five of the top eight times in the U.S. this year, with six different runners finishing under 10 minutes!

Mitchell, whose time in Minnesota was the 11th fastest in the world this year, will be bidding for a return trip to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship when she competes at the Mideast Regional at Indiana University. She earned All-America honors with an eighth place finish in the steeplechase at the national meet a year ago.
