Track and Field: Weekly Release (January 28, 2002)
Jan. 28, 2002 THIS WEEK: Butler's track and field squad will take a brief break from its three-meet home indoor series and will travel to South Bend to compete in the Meyo Invitational. The two-day competition hosted by the University of Notre Dame will begin on Friday, Feb. 1, at 6 p.m., and will continue on Saturday, Feb. 2, beginning at 10 a.m. Butler head coach Joe Franklin won't take the full Butler team to the Meyo Invitational, but he will enter several squad members in both the men's and women's competition. Butler will be back in action in Indianapolis on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9, at the prestigious Cannon IV Classic. SMITH BARNEY INVITATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: *Newcomer Mark Tucker (Geelong, Australia) competed in his first 5,000 meter run for the Bulldogs, and he wound up placing seventh in a talent-laden field in 14:10.57. His time earned him provisional qualifier status for the NCAA Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship and bettered the existing Australian Indoor 5,000 meter record. Tucker placed second among collegiate runners in the race, trailing only Chris Powers of Indiana. *Freshman Brandon Waggonner (Brownsburg) ran a career-best 51.24 in the 400 meter dash. He also posted a 23.80 in the 200 meter dash. *Sophomore Trent Elliott (Westerville, Ohio) ran a season-best 51.85 in the 400, a career-best 23.67 in the 200 and a career-best 8.64 in the 60 meter hurdles. *Freshman Corey Norman (Park Ridge, Ill.) became the first Butler athlete to compete in the pole vault since 1994. The first-year performer placed seventh in the competition with a vault of 13-0. *Senior Monika Stupian (Veszprem, Hungary) turned in the highest individual running events finish among Butler's women competitors by placing fifth in the mile run in a season-best time of 5:02.01. *Sophomore Rholonda Ash (Ft. Wayne), continued her strong early season performance with a seventh place finish in the 400 meter dash in a season-best time of 58.71. *Freshman Jill Snyder (Temperance, Mich.) turned in the highest overall individual finish among Butler's women competitors by placing third in the pole vault. Butler's first female pole vaulter cleared the bar at 9-06, in just her second collegiate pole vault competition. |
