May 6, 2004
Sophomore Monica Behney and junior Victoria Mitchell set a pair of league records to highlight Butler's first day at the 2004 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Thursday, May 6. Butler's women ended the opening session of the championship in first place, while Butler's men stood in a tie for second.
Behney ran the last race of the opening day and turned in one of the meet's top performances. She pulled away from the 10,000 meter field with three laps remaining and crossed the finish line in a school and league record 35:45.59. She finished 14 seconds ahead of runner-up Jenni Goebel of UIC, who previously held the league mark of 35:57.18. Behney also eclipsed the school mark of 36:26.43 held by former teammate Lissa Vogley.
Mitchell claimed Butler's first title of the evening with a record performance in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Mitchell also had the second-fastest 800 meter qualifying time (2:16.04) on the opening night. Butler's men swept the top three spots in the 10,000 meter run. Junior Nick Goodliffe out-raced junior teammate Olly Laws in the final 100 meters to claim first place in the race in 31:03.44. Laws finished second in 31:06.50, while senior Brian Dunn, who out-sprinted UW-Milwaukee's Ben Uphoff in the final 80 meters, came in third in 31:14.91.
