Jesse Levknecht Places First In Panther Invitational
Nov. 4, 2002 PANTHER INVITATIONAL: The Butler women's swimming team captured a fourth place finish over the weekend at the Panther Invitational, hosted by Eastern Illinois University. The Bulldogs recorded 282 points at the meet, behind the host Panthers (685), Valparaiso (424.5), Lewis (397.5). IUPUI (255) and Lincoln (196) rounded out the scoring. The Butler men's swimming team placed sixth with 205 points. EIU took home the top spot with 629 points, followed by IUPUI (431), Valparaiso (371), Lincoln (265) and Lewis (223). QUOTING ELLIS: "This Butler swimming team is back...a fire has been lit under my swimmers and they are swimming like they love the sport again," said head coach Nichole Ellis. "Swimming is one of those sports that all the hours and hours of training are worth it when you hit the wall in sometimes under 20 seconds of your previous best. Each practice and each meet, the Bulldogs are learning what being a team and supporting each other is all about. It was a great weekend for us - the score may not show it, but what is happening in the water with our tiny team of 19 is enormous." BACK IN ACTION: Sophomore Jesse Levknecht touched the wall first in the 100 backstroke, finishing in a time of 1:02.50. Levknecht narrowly missed her second first-place finish of the day, placing second in the 100 Butterfly in a time of 1:01.50, just behind Valparaiso's Ashley Seale, who finished in a time of 1:01.29. She also placed second in the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:17.55. A ONE-TWO PUNCH: Sophomore Kaylee Quilling and junior Catie Scott recorded back-to-back finishes in the 50 Freestyle for the second week in a row. Quilling placed third in the 50 Free with a time of 25.29, while Scott came in fourth in a time of 25.40. Quilling then narrowly edged Scott out in the 100 Freestyle, placing second in a time of 54.03 just ahead of Scott who finished in fourth with a time of 55.22. The duo also placed in the Top-10 of the 200 Freestyle as Scott placed third with a time of 1:59.98, while Quilling placed sixth in a time of 2:01.43. OFF TO THE RACES: Sophomore Carlton Racette captured the lone men's first place finish, in addition to recording two second-place finishes at the Panther Invitational. Racette tallied the top time in the 200 Butterfly, finishing in 2:00.57. Racette placed second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.67 and second in the 400 IM in a time of 4:19.87. A WINNING COMBINATION: The women's 200 Medley Relay team consisting of Jesse Levknecht, Amber Gault, Cherri Mosher and Kaylee Quilling recorded a first place finish, beating head coach Nicole Ellis' alma mater, IUPUI, by a full second. Butler's 400 Freestyle Relay team also finished second in the Panther Invitational, in a time of 3:46.95, behind EIU. OTHER NOTABLES: Carlo Girolamo and John Allan recorded back-to-back finishes in the 50 Freestyle, as Girolamo finished in sixth position with a time of 22.90, while Allan placed seventh in a time of 23.13... Sven Rebchbeth recorded a personal-best in the same event, finishing with a time of 29.84... Brendon Van Cleve's time of 56.46 in the 100 Backstroke earned him a third place finish...Van Cleve also finished third in the 200 Backstroke in a time of 2:04.73... Megan Fried tallied a personal-best in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:09.86 UP NEXT: The Bulldog swimming teams will travel to Muncie, Ind. to participate in a dual-meet against Ball State and Valparaiso on Nov. 22 beginning at 6 p.m. |
