Bulldog Swimmers Honored Again For Academic Success
July 28, 2006 Indianapolis, Ind. - The Butler men's and women's swimming teams were both recognized as Academic All-American Teams for the second-consecutive semester by the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). The association made the announcement earlier this month. The women's team posted a 3.67 grade point average in the spring to boost their cumulative GPA to 3.49. The mark tied them with George Washington for the 11th-highest GPA in the nation, giving the squad back-to-back ratings of "superior" by the CSCAA. The men's team continued their success in the classroom by recording a 3.17 GPA in the spring to boost their cumulative mark to 3.08, which placed them in the top 30 nationally. It is the second semester in a row that the team has held a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher for a rating of "excellent" by the CSCAA. "It is a major accomplishment for our program to be recognized two semesters in a row for this award," head coach Maurice Stewart said. "It's clear our student-athletes are committed to academic achievement, and their hard work was acknowledged at the national level." A total of 417 collegiate teams met the criteria for the award, with all eligible team members averaging at least a 2.8 GPA on a 4.0 scale. A team was considered "commendable" for posting a minimum GPA of 2.8, "excellent" for a minimum of 3.00 and "superior" for a minimum of 3.25.
The swimming teams' academic success was also at the top among Butler's athletic programs, with the women's team leading all of the sports programs and the men's team checking in at third overall.
