Nov. 12, 2006

Complete Results

Carmel, Ind. - Butler swam to 16 season-best times in their second home meet of the season on Sunday (Nov. 12), but both the men's and women's squads came up on the short end against UIC and UW-Milwaukee. The men's team dropped to the Flames, 214-60, and to the Panthers, 227-57, while the women's team lost to UIC, 180.5-87.5, and to UWM, 223-63.

"I was pleased with our teams' performance today," head coach Maurice Stewart said. "We are showing signs of improvement. We raced very well and had much better team spirit, which certainly helped multiple swimmers post season best times.

"I feel this was our best meet so far this season."

The meet began well for the men's squad, as the 400 medley relay team notched a season-best time of 3:34.05, thanks in part to Korey McCulley's season-best 100 backstroke split of 56.60. McCulley also notched a fast showing in the 200 back with a time of 2:06.62.

Raj Duggal posted a pair of season-best marks, recording a 1:47.12 in the 200 free and a 4:51.47 in the 500 free. Chris Gordon also notched a top mark in the 100 free with a 48.25 the sixth-fastest 100 free time in school history, while Jason Brozek swam to a season-best 4:21.75 in the 400 IM, trimming nearly eight seconds off his previous personal best.

Also posting strong performances in the meet were Ben Shafer (100 breast - 1:07.38, 1,000 free - 10:45.42, 100 free - 51.74), Josh Bennett (200 fly - 2:13.32, 100 fly - 58.32), Jeff Harrigan (100 back - 1:04.97, 100 fly - 1:03.99) and Travis Cheney (100 fly - 1:03.45).

The women's squad also jumped out to a quick start in the meet, notching a season-best time of 4:12.33 in the 400 medley relay.

Julie Elmore was one of the team's strongest individual performers, notching three season-best times, including an 11:50.60 in the 1,000 free, a 58.98 in the 100 free and a 1:09.01 in the 100 fly.

Also recording strong showings were Momo Wilson (100 breast - 1:15.92), Kendall Wormley (200 back - 2:29.14), Melissa Nemec (100 fly - 1:06.34), Katie Krueger (50 free - 26.44, 100 free - 59.65), Stephanie Altepeter (400 IM - 5:03.20), Stephanie Moles (500 free - 5:47.09), Ali Overgaard (100 fly split - 1:02.22) and Beth Ann Mensing (1,000 free - 11:46.95).

"We need to carry this positive energy and team confidence into the TYR College Swimming Invitational in a few weeks," Stewart added. "We need to work on improving the second halves of our 100 and 200 event races and then fine tune skills which will set us up for a good mid-season championship meet."

The Bulldogs close out the fall portion of the 2006-07 season from Dec. 1-2 when they participate in the TYR Classic in Kenosha, Wis.
