Racette Leads Bulldogs with Three Wins

Nov. 3, 2003

Carlton Racette highlighted a successful Butler performance with three individual wins in this weekend's Eastern Illinois Invitational. Both the men and women's teams placed fourth overall in the six-team fields. Racette scored victories in the 200-yd. butterfly and the 200-yd. and 400-yd. individual medleys.

Jesse Levknecht led the women's team with first-place finishes in the 100-yd. and 200-yd. butterfly and the 100-yd. backstroke. Levknecht was also a part of Butler's winning 200-yd. and 400-yd. medley relay teams and the 200-yd. freestyle relay team that took second in the meet.

"With the improvements that our times have seen over the course of the last few weeks, we're finally figuring out what it takes in practice and in meets to succeed at the highest level," said coach Nichole Ellis.

"Our ladies came in as a group and took places that no one expected," said Ellis. "Jesse was the stud of the women's team with three individual wins."

Catie Scott won the 200-yd. freestyle with a time of 1:58.78 and placed second in the 100-yd. freestyle. Mary Beth Arnold won the 100-yd. breaststroke in 1:10.35 and took third in the 200-yd. breaststroke. Sophomore Kate Manker took second in the 1650-yd. freestyle with a time of 20:19.04, while Cherie Mosher's 4:55.93 in the 400-yd. individual medley was good enough for fourth.

For the men's team, freshman Raj Duggal took first in the 1650-yd. freestyle with a time of 16:45.05 and second in the 500-yd. freestyle with 4:48.41. Brendan Van Cleve took third in both the 100-yd. and 200-yd. backstrokes. Duggal and Van Cleve joined Racette and Kris Cossairt on the 800-yd. freestyle relay team that took third overall.

"We had a lot of season-best times on the men's side, but Carlton's three individual wins highlighted the weekend."

Both teams travel to Cincinnati Friday for a 7 p.m. dual meet with Xavier.
