Carmel, Ind. - The Butler women's swimming team opened up their 2007-08 campaign at home over the weekend, as the Bulldogs hosted teams from Evansville, Saint Louis and Valparaiso on Saturday (Oct. 20) at the Carmel High School pool.

The Bulldogs received several strong performances in their first meet of the year, including a handful turned in by newcomers.

Freshman Leigh Weston put together an outstanding first meet with the team, notching a team-best third-place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:33.52, which ranks as the 10th-fastest 200 breast time in school history. She also added a seventh-place showing in the 200 IM, swimming the trip in 2:23.89.

Junior Sarah Lynne Gates also had a strong day, finishing fifth in the 200 IM (2:21.03) and sixth in the 200 back (2:18.67). Additionally, her lead leg in the 400 freestyle relay yielded a swift 57.70 100 freestyle time.

Senior Elizabeth Shafer chipped in top-10 marks in the meet, swimming to a sixth-place finish in the 200 free (2:04.17) and an eighth-place showing in the 500 free (5:33.81).

Sophomore Julie Elmore turned in the team's top distance performance, swimming a 12:05.13 in the 1,000 free. Junior Katie Krueger, meanwhile, was the top sprinter, swimming the 50 in 26.06 and the 100 in 59.48.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, Nov. 3 when they welcome Illinois State and Horizon League foe Youngstown State to the Carmel High School pool for a 2:00 p.m. tri-meet.
