Swimming Puts Up Fast Times In First Home Meet Of The Year

Carmel, Ind. - The Butler men's and women's swimming team held their first home meet of the 2006-07 campaign, welcoming Evansville, Saint Louis and Valparaiso to the Carmel High School pool for a quad-meet on Sunday (Oct. 14) afternoon. Both squads turned in fast times, including several top-five finishes and a career-best time.
Raj Duggal put up some of the Bulldogs' best showings of the day for the men's team, placing second in the 1,000 freestyle with a 10:18.81 and adding a fourth-place showing in the 200 fly with a 2:05.97. Korey McCulley notched a third-place showing and set a career-fast time of 21.80 in the 50 freestyle. He also led off the 400 medley relay with a 100 backstroke leg time of 57.95 and notched a fifth-place showing in the 200 back (2:08.81).
Jason Brozek chipped in a third-place time of 2:17.76 in the 200 breaststroke as well as a fourth-place mark of 2:02.47 in the 200 IM. Chris Gordon finished fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:50.77), while Jimmy Howard finished fifth in the 100 freestyle (51.14).
Duggal, Josh Bennett, Ben Shafer and Alex Tracy finished the day by placing third in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:27.08.
Mary Beth Arnold paced the women's squad, placing second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:29.17 and adding a fourth-place showing in the 200 IM with a 2:17.45, the fastest regular-season time in school history. Meanwhile, Sarah Lynne Gates added a fifth-place showing in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:18.40.
In the relays, Gates, Arnold, Ali Overgaard and Stephanie Moles swam to a fourth-place showing in the 400 medley relay (4:00.06), while the team of Overgaard, Julie Elmore, Elizabeth Shafer and Stephanie Altepeter added a fourth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:52.93. "We definitely brought the competitiveness from the Indiana Intercollegiate into the meet here today," head coach Maurice Stewart said. "We put up some great showings and had some lifetime bests even though it is still early in the year." For their performances in the meet, Arnold and McCulley were named the Butler Swimmers of the Meet by coach Stewart. The Bulldogs return to action next weekend when they head to Lexington, Ky. for a dual meet with Transylvania on Saturday (Oct. 21) beginning at 2:00 p.m.
