Bucknell Women's Swimming and Diving Begins 2005 Season with Strong Showing at Bucknell Damon's Sprint Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's swimming and diving squad began the 2005 season with a strong performance at its own Bucknell Damon's Sprint Invitational on Saturday in Kinney Natatorium. The Bison competed against American, La Salle and Saint Francis (Pa.) and came away with six individual and four relay wins in the meet. Senior Lectie Altman (Syracuse, N.Y./William Nottingham) and junior Rebecca Scheffter (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) were both double winners for Bucknell as Altman took first in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 29.94 and in the 100 back with a time of 58.59, while Scheffter captured the top spot in the 50 and 100 free events with times of 24.80 and 53.23, respectively. Scheffter also managed a second place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:57.34 and took third in the 100 back in 1:03.69. Altman headed up a one-two-three Bison sweep in the 100 back and was a part of a second as the Orange and Blue took the top three spots in the 100 fly as well. She came in second in the 500 free in 5:10.14 and tied classmate Lauren Reed (South Plainfield, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) for third in 100 fly as the pair both swam the event in 1:00.74. Senior Mary Krakowski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and junior Katherine Munson (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) rounded out Bucknell's individual winners in the meet as Krakowski claimed first in the 50 fly with a time of 27.55 and Munson won the 100 fly in 59.96. Krakowski finished second behind Munson in the 100 fly with a time of 1:00.03 while Munson was two spots behind Krakowski in the 50 fly, taking third in 27.74. Munson also turned in a third place finish in the 100 IM with a time of 1:02.89. Junior Laura Goeller (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School) came in second in both the 100 and 400 IM events with times of 1:02.67 and 4:40.78. The Bison were dominant in the relay events as well, winning four relays with two one-two sweeps. The team of Altman, freshman Nikki Seaman (Cleveland, Ohio), Krakowski and Scheffter won the 400 medley relay in 4:04.00. They were followed by Munson, junior Nikki Woodward (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow), Reed and freshman Susan Horstmann (Havertown, Pa.) in second with a time of 4:06.68. Altman, Woodward, Krakowski and Scheffter took top honors in the 200 medley relay in 1:52.41, while Bucknell's squad of Munson, Goeller, Reed and Horstmann finished in the runner-up slot with a time of 1:53. The Orange and Blue also posted wins in the 200 free and 400 free relays as the team of freshman Alexandra Lovallo (Ridgefield, Conn.), Krakowski, sophomore Kristen Skroski (North Haven, Conn./Hopkins) and Scheffter captured first place honors in the 200 free in 1:39.59 and Horstmann, Lovallo, Skroski and Scheffter won the 400 free in 3:40.08. Bucknell returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 12, with a double dual meet against Patriot League opponents Navy and Lafayette in Kinney Natatorium beginning at 2 p.m. |
