Bucknell Women's Soccer Collects 1-0 Victory Over Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Junior Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) scored in the 63rd minute to help lift the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon. The win moves the Bison to 1-1-0 on the season, while the Pioneers are now 0-1-0. Freshman Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) produced the first quality scoring chance by either squad in the contest, but her shot in the 12th minute was turned aside by Sacred Heart goalkeeper Meghan Reichelt. Sophomore Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) made three stops in the first half for the Bison and the teams entered the intermission in a scoreless deadlock. Bucknell came out of the break on the offensive, taking four of the first five shots of the half, placing two on frame. Then, at 62:55, Dervarics collected a loose ball in front of the Pioneers' net and knocked it past Reichelt on the right-hand side. The Bison nearly added two additional goals in the closing minutes as Matlack was stopped on a breakaway at 68:49 and, at 77:13, junior Nicole Marotta (Bridgewater, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) redirected a corner kick that was cleared off the line by a Sacred Heart defender. Bucknell outshot the Pioneers, 17-12, while corner kicks and fouls were even at four and 14, respectively. Sutton finished the contest with five saves to record her first collegiate shutout for the Orange and Blue, while Reichelt totaled seven saves for Sacred Heart. The Bison will return to action this Wednesday, Sept. 5, as the squad will travel to Piscataway, N.J., for a match against 12th-ranked Rutgers, which is slated for 7 p.m. |
