Bucknell Women's Lax Downed by Holy Cross, 16-6
April 7, 2007
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Patricia Sutton registered four goals and an assist and Kristine Corkum and Nikki Bolduc added three goals apiece to lead defending Patriot League champion Holy Cross to a 16-6 victory over Bucknell at cold and windy Graham Field on Saturday afternoon. Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) and Chelsea Peters (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) scored twice apiece for the Bison, who dropped their fourth straight game and fell to 4-7 overall, 1-2 in the Patriot League. The first-place Crusaders improved to 8-4, 3-0. Holy Cross showed its quick-strike ability, scoring eight goals within one minute of a draw, with three of them coming in response to a Bucknell tally. Buechel's free-position goal with 16:29 left tied the game at 1-1, but the Crusaders answered just 59 seconds later on an 8-meter shot from Corkum. Just 19 seconds later, the speedy Corkum finished a long run to the goal with a bounce shot to make it a 3-1 game. The Bison drew within 3-2 when Peters gathered in a rebound right in front of the crease and stuck back shot into the upper left corner of the cage. Later in the half the Bison trailed 5-2 when Carol Donohue (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) aggressively rode goalie Megan Orr behind the goal, forcing an errant pass. Alison Heffernan (Malvern, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) pounced on the loose ball and walked in and scored as Orr tried to scramble back. The game began to slip away from the Bison when Ali Baird and Sutton scored 37 seconds apart to make it a 7-3 game. Corkum's unassisted tally with 2:11 left in the half have the Crusaders an 8-3 lead, and Bolduc completed the four-goal run with just 17 seconds left in the half. Bucknell snuck one more in just before intermission, when Peters came from behind the net on a restart and from a tough angle beat the buzzer to make it a 9-4 game. Holy Cross potted the first four goals of the second stanza, including three in just 1:10, to take a 13-4 lead. Buechel and Sarah Collins (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./John Jay) registered back-to-back goals to bring the Bison within 13-6, but Bolduc answered the Collins goal just 28 seconds later and the Crusaders scored the last three of the day. Holy Cross scored on 9 of 15 first-half shots and finished with a 38-19 shot advantage. Bison goalie Katie Hartsock (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) finished with 14 saves, 11 coming in the second half as she got hot late. The Bison were hampered by 26 turnovers, 11 coming on clearing attempts. Bucknell will be back at home on Thursday, taking on Wagner in a non-conference game beginning at 6 p.m. |
