Bucknell Academic All-Americans to be Honored Saturday

Halftime Presentation at Towson Football Game to Recognize One Hundred Bison All-Americans

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell University is well-known for producing outstanding student-athletes who not only excel on the playing fields, but in the classroom as well. There is perhaps no better indicator of this crucial harmony than the Verizon Academic All-America program, which honors individuals who stand out from the rest as great athletes and even better students. Over the last 31 years, Bucknell has claimed an even 100 Academic All-Americans, with baseball player Russ Lindberg bringing the Bison to the century plateau last spring.

At this Saturday's home football game against Towson, many of those Academic All-America honorees will return to Lewisburg for a special halftime presentation saluting their achievement. A total of 66 student athletes have received the award since 1970, including 26 two-time winners and four three-time recipients. Among the triple winners are former baseball star Joe Markulike '90, who was named the national Academic All-American of the Year in 1990 and will be inducted into the Bucknell Athletic Hall of Fame on October 20, Jennifer Walz '89, the women's basketball team's all-time scoring leader, Stacey Spitko '88, who was honored for both softball and basketball in 1987, and baseball standout Jeff Inchalik '85.

Anna Cervenak, director of external affairs at Verizon, will represent the award's title sponsor at the halftime presentation.

With 100 Academic All-Americans, Bucknell ranks third nationally among all Division I institutions, behind only Nebraska and Notre Dame.

Student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.20 grade-point average and be a starter or key reserve to be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, but those minimums generally must be far surpassed when matched up against the nation's best.

Kickoff for the Bucknell-Towson football is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
