Bucknell's Dan Blankenship Named PL Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of Year
April 3, 2002 LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell junior guard Dan Blankenship (Moundsville, W.Va./Wheeling Park H.S.) has been named the Patriot League Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, becoming the third Bison in the last four years to claim the honor, the Patriot League office announced Wednesday. An accounting major with a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average, Blankenship served as a team co-captain and started every game for Bucknell in 2001-02. He led Bucknell in assists (3.2 per game) and minutes played (32.3 per game) this season while helping his team to a berth in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals for the ninth time in 12 years. Blankenship also ranked sixth in the Patriot League in assists and fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio. Blankenship, who has played in all 84 varsity games since arriving on Bucknell's campus, scored a career-high 16 points twice this season, against American and Cornell. Off the court, Blankenship and the entire Bucknell men's basketball team were very active in the Susquehanna Valley community. As team captain, Blankenship helped organize a Halloween trip to a local children's hospital, Thanksgiving food serving at a local community center and several kids clinics. A two-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, Blankenship is only the third junior in the 12-year history of the league to win the Scholar-Athlete honor, joining Bucknell's Valter Karavanic and Colgate's Adonal Foyle. Karavanic won the award in both 1999 and 2000, while other Bucknell winners include Tom Welch in 1997 and Paul Olkaowski in 1993. In order to be eligible for Scholar-Athlete accolades, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum 3.20 cumulative GPA, be at least a sophomore and a starter or key reserve for his/her team. One Scholar-Athlete is selected in each sport, with winners eligible for the Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards at the end of the academic year. Bucknell finished the 2001-02 season with a 13-16 overall record. The Bison earned the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament by virtue of an 8-6 conference record. |
