Walter, Wolf, Mahony and Stoll Make All-Patriot League Baseball Teams
May 5, 2004 LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell baseball team (20-24), which wrapped up its season Tuesday with a 9-5 win over Temple, had four players honored on Wednesday by the Patriot League on its all-conference first and second teams. Kyle Walter (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) and Pete Wolf (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park & River Forest) were first team honorees, while Chris Mahony (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) and Ben Stoll (Swampscott, Mass./Swampscott) made the second team. Sophomore Walter finishes with a Bucknell-best .372 batting average, 23 points higher than any of his teammates. He also led the Bison this year in most offensive categories with 31 runs scored, 48 hits, 12 doubles, five triples, seven home runs, 25 RBI, 101 total bases, and a .647 slugging percentage. Walter was also rewarded for his defense, making just four errors in 100 chances for a .962 fielding percentage. It is the second all-league honor for the 2003 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, who made the league's second team last year. Wolf, a senior designated hitter, receives his first Patriot League honor. He finished fourth among regular Bison starters with a .315 average, collecting a team third-best 47 hits and seven doubles, as well as a team second-best 22 RBI. Wolf also appeared in a team-high 43 of Bucknell's 44 contests, starting 41. Mahony, another senior, is also honored for the first time after enjoying a breakout season in 2004. The left fielder's .339 average was second among regular starters, to go with a fourth-best 43 hits and second-best 22 runs. Mahony was in the Patriot League's batting title race for a stretch during the season, highlighted with a 10-for-15 week against Penn State and Navy in March. Stoll, the Patriot League's batting champ and first-team honoree in 2003 with a .376 average, hit .319 this year, capping a career that also saw him hit .319 over his four years. The senior finishes with a team second-best 51 hits this year after notching 50 last season. His seven doubles and 62 total bases are both third on the team, and he was Bucknell's top base stealer by far this year, swiping 12 while his closest teammate had six. As a team, Bucknell finished with a 20-24 record after enduring a difficult 15-for-19 losing stretch that also cost Bucknell its chance at repeating the Patriot League title and NCAA Tournament berth it earned in 2003. Nine seniors, including three of the team's four weekend starters and five starting position players plus designated hitter Wolf, finished their careers this season.
