Box Score

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Sean Driscoll (Colts Neck, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) improved to 2-0 on the season with the help of 13 hits from the Bison offense as the Bucknell baseball team rallied past Mount St. Mary's, 5-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Depew Field. The Orange and Blue improve to 7-14 with the victory while The Mount falls to 9-11.

The Bison found themselves down 3-0 in the first inning after Mike Gioioso reached on an error with one out for Mount St. Mary's and Josh Vittek followed with an RBI double down the right field line. Then with two out, Vittek scored on a double by Joe Kotula and the following batter, Matt Trusch drove in Kotula with a single up the middle.

In the bottom of the third, Bucknell rallied to tie the score at three. Senior Chris Grandizio (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) led off with a double to center and senior Brad Duvall (Hampstead, Md./Hereford) was hit by a pitch. Then senior Matt Capece (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) sent the runners to second and third with a successful sacrifice bunt and the next batter, senior Kyle Walter (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area), blasted the first pitch of his at-bat over the centerfield fence to erase the deficit.

The following inning, the Bison took a 4-3 lead after sophomore Jason Buursma (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) belted a leadoff triple to right center and classmate Austin Turban (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) followed with a single up the middle to drive him in.

Once again in the sixth, Buursma began the inning with a triple and scored his second run of the contest after a botched throw to third allowed him to come home on the same play.

The Mount threatened in the ninth, cutting Bucknell's advantage to 5-4 when a groundout by Vittek plated Gioioso, but Buursma struck out Stephan Fay looking to end the game.

After giving up three hits in the first inning, Driscoll let up just two more over his following five innings of work. He pitched six innings and allowed three unearned runs on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts to earn the win for the Orange and Blue. Sophomore Max Goldstein (Atlanta, Ga./Paideia School) relieved him and did not allow a hit in two-thirds of an inning with two walks and one strikeout. Junior Nathan Mittag (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) retired the lone batter he faced in the seventh, while Walter tossed 1.1 innings and allowed one run on two hits with no walks and one strikeout. Buursma recorded the final two outs of the contest and allowed no runs on two hits with one strikeout on his way to his second save of the season.

Starter Jim Serafin suffered the loss (0-1) for Mount St. Mary's as he pitched five innings and allowed all five runs on nine hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Dustin Pease pitched two scoreless innings of relief and gave up three hits with no walks and one strikeout, while Bucky Kosyk worked the ninth and surrendered one hit with no walks and one strikeout.

Buursma finished the contest, hitting 3-for-4 with two triples and two runs scored, while Walter went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored. Capece, junior Ryan Gryskevicz (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) and Grandizio all had two-hit games for the Bison. Kotula was the lone member of The Mount to register multiple hits as he batted 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Bucknell continues its homestand this weekend when the Orange and Blue will begin Patriot League play with a four-game series against Lehigh this Saturday and Sunday, April 1-2, with each doubleheader starting at noon.
