Bison Baseball Downs UMass 4-2 for First Win of the Season
March 16, 2005 BRADENTON, Fla. - Kyle Walter scored the go ahead run in the top of the sixth after doubling to left field, Wednesday morning in Bradenton, Fla. Chris Pieper brought his teammate around with an RBI double through the left side making the score 3-2. The Bison tacked on another run in the top of the ninth as Ed Rubbo led off with a double and would make the final score 4-2 coming home on a wild pitch. Marc Cussatt (1-1) got his first win of the season as Phil Futrick was credited with the save. The Bison offense was as solid as it's been all year as Bucknell smacked eight hits on the day including five doubles. The Bison struck first, scoring their first run in the top of the fourth inning when Kyle Walter was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third as Chris Pieper reached base on a UMass error. Walter would then cross the plate as Pieper was caught in a run-down that would eventually become the third out of the inning. Evan Weiss smacked a double down the left field line in the top of the fifth inning, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a hard hit single by Ed Rubbo, widening the Bison lead to 2-0. The Minutemen evened the score in the bottom of the fifth when two UMass runners crossed the plate tying the score at 2-2. Jason Buursma took the mound in relief for the Bison, pitching a stellar three and a third innings. Futrick took the mound with one gone in the bottom of the ninth but the Minutemen kept it interesting. After striking out the first batter he faced, Derrick Durepo smashed a ball down the right field line with Sam Boone one first base. Boone came around third to attempt to score as Weiss fielded the ball and threw to cut-off man Matt Capece who threw a perfect strike to catcher Matt Belmont to nab Boone at the plate for the final out of the game. The Bison continue the spring break slate tomorrow evening when they take on the Miami (Ohio) at 8 p.m., in Bradenton, Fla. |
