Five-Run Fifth Helps Bucknell Baseball Defeat Coppin State, 7-3
March 10, 2004
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell (4-3) was even with Coppin State (3-11) at one run apiece until the Bison bats exploded for a five-run fifth, all but salting the game into the win column. Sophomore Phil Futrick earned his first decision of the season, throwing five innings and allowing just three hits with one unearned run. Seven players shared Bucknell's eight hits, with Ben Stoll earning two. Sam Moss had a game-high two RBI, both on a triple in the Bison fifth. Jay Riggs led the visitors with two hits, as pitcher Matt Davis dropped his record to 0-5 by getting tagged for six runs in five innings. Bucknell got on the board first in the bottom of the second. Brian Hirschberg doubled to right field and got the next two bases on mistakes by the pitcher Davis. Hirschberg took third on a wild pitch and scored on a balk to give Bucknell a 1-0 lead. But Coppin State tied the game in their half of the fourth. Eddie Wilson reached on an error by Sam Moss when the Bucknell second baseman dropped a fly ball he had run down in shallow right field. After a single by Riggs, Nick Wenger picked up the RBI when he reached on a fielder's choice. The Bison broke the deadlock in the fifth when Stoll singled home Phil Bunting from third. With Stoll and Chris Mahony on, Moss tripled to right field and cleared the bases, putting Bucknell up 4-1. Moss reached home when Kyle Walter reached on an error by Coppin shortstop Graham Johnson, one of five he had on the day. Bucknell's fifth run of the inning came when Wolf singled home Walter from second. Jacob Moss had another fine outing in relief following Sunday's mop-up work, throwing the sixth and seventh and allowing just one hit. Ryan Gryskevicz pitched the eighth hitless. The sixth and seventh also went by uneventfully for Coppin's Nathan Penrose, who gave up two hits in his two innings of work. Bucknell earned its final run in the eighth off Bryan Crossley. With Chris Grandizio on third, Matt Capece reached on one of Johnson's errors, scoring the run. The Eagles countered with two in the top of the ninth off Bucknell's fourth pitcher of the day, Marc Cussatt. Riggs doubled home Wilson and later scored on a groundout by Chris Ramsey on the penultimate out of the game. The Bison will travel to Florida this weekend for games each day from Sunday, Mar. 14 through Saturday, Mar. 20. Bucknell will encounter Columbia to open the spring break trip on Sunday at 10 a.m.
