March 10, 2002

Box Score

BRADENTON, Fla. - Junior Ben Krentzman and sophomore Ben Stoll ripped two hits apiece, but Indiana University jumped out to a 6-0 lead and held on for an 8-4 victory in non-league baseball action this afternoon at Academy Park.

The game was the first of seven contests the Bison will play during their Spring Break Trip.

The Bison fell to 4-7 for the season with the loss, while Indiana hiked its record to 7-3.

Indiana starter Jacob Cary (2-1) threw eight innings while picking up seven strikeouts to earn the victory. The Hoosiers supported Cary with 14 hits for the game. Junior Zach Allen started and took the loss for the Bison. Allen (1-3) hurled four and two-thirds innings, but gave up just one run on seven hits.

Neither team scored until the top of the fourth, when Indiana's Vasili Spanos launched a solo home run to left. Indiana pushed its lead to 5-0 after a four-run sixth. The Hoosiers loaded the bases on Bucknell reliever Chris Lackett, who was making his first appearance of the season, and scored their first two runs on a single and walk to make it 3-0. With one out, senior Sean Magee was brought on to relieve Lackett, and Indiana scored two more runs on a single and a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the eighth Bucknell finally broke against Cary, who scattered four hits in the first seven innings. Stoll got things started with a leadoff single, and sophomore Chris Cipolloni reached on an error. After a double play, senior Eric Fishman walked, putting runners on first and second. Junior B.J. Batterson followed up with an RBI-single to center, scoring Cipolloni, before Krentzman blasted a three-run homer to straightaway centerfield to pull Bucknell to within 6-4. Krentzman's gopher ball was his first collegiate home run.

Indiana tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the top of the ninth, and Hoosier reliever Ryan Smith retired the Bison in order in the bottom of the ninth.

Lackett pitched two-thirds of an inning for Bucknell and recorded one strikeout while giving up three hits and two earned runs. He also walked three batters and hit a batter. In three and two-thirds innings of work, Magee allowed three earned runs on four hits. He also had one strikeout.

Fishman ripped his team-leading third triple of the season for the Bison in the bottom of the first.

Bucknell returns to action tomorrow against Northern Illinois at 2:30.
