Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. - Bucknell's baseball team used a three-run eighth inning to come from behind and defeat Liberty, 10-9, on Sunday afternoon at Worthington Stadium. The win gave the Bison (3-2) a split in the two game series with Liberty, and snapped the Flames' (5-1) five-game winning streak.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the eighth inning, Bucknell scored on a wild pitch before Kevin Eiben (Delta, British Columbia/Vancouver College) and John DiBonaventura (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) hit back-to-back RBI singles, giving the Bison a 10-9 lead. The Bison bullpen shut down the Flames in the final two frames to preserve the 10-9 victory.

Liberty scored first when Joey Monahan walked to lead off the game and later scored from third base on a wild pitch. Bucknell scored two runs in the top of the second inning and Liberty matched that score in the bottom of the second, giving the Flames a 3-2 lead after two complete innings.

Bucknell scored four runs in the third inning, highlighted by co-captain Chris Herron's (Vienna, Va./Bishop O'Connell) three-run home run to right field, putting the Bison ahead 6-3. It was the first home run of Herron's career. Liberty responded in the bottom of the third with a two-run home run by Keith Butler to center field, to bring the Flames within one.

Bucknell extended its lead to 7-5 in the top of the fourth inning when Ian Joseph (Novelty, Ohio/West Geauga) tripled to center field and scored on an error by Butler in center field. Liberty tied the game at 7-7 in the fifth inning, scoring two runs on three hits including a two-out RBI double to center field by Steve Baker.

Liberty took a 9-7 lead in the seventh inning, scoring two runs without the benefit of a hit. Butler was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a balk, before Anthony Pennix walked and Chad Bryan moved the runners to first and third with an infield putout. A wild pitch by R.J. Grant (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) scored Butler from third. Trey Miller then walked and a double-steal by Miller and pinch runner Joel Patrick gave the Flames a two-run advantage, before Bucknell's three-run eighth.

Grant received the win for the Bison and Gregg Farmery (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) pitched the ninth inning to earn his second save of the season. Matt Stewart suffered the loss for Liberty, falling to 0-1 on the season.

Bucknell will return to action next weekend, March 3-4, when it hosts Cornell University in a four-game series. Doubleheaders vs. the Biog Red are scheduled to begin at 12:00 noon on both Saturday and Sunday.
