Nine-Run Eighth Lifts James Madison Past Bucknell, 16-6
Feb. 22, 2004
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Mike Butia and David Stoneburner drove in four runs apiece and James Madison used a nine-run eighth inning to pull away from Bucknell 16-6 in the rubber game of a three-game series on Sunday at Long Field/Mauck Stadium. The Dukes rapped 15 hits and took advantage of five Bison errors in improving to 5-1 on the season. Bucknell fell to 1-2 following its first weekend of outdoor action. Sophomore Phil Futrick, the 2003 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, made his first career start on the mound for the Bison and allowed four runs, three earned, in three innings. Tim Peacock (0-1), Nathan Mittag, Matt Curry, Ryan Gryskevicz and Luke Mara all worked in relief. Kyle Walter went 2-for-5 and Chris Mahony drove in three runs for Bucknell. Brian Day belted his second home run of the series leading off the top of the sixth inning. The blast tied the game at 4-4 two innings after the Dukes erased a 3-1 deficit with a three-run fourth. Mahony's two-out, bases-clearing double gave the Bison a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth, but JMU quickly regained the lead on Stoneburner's two-run double and Brandon Bowser's RBI fielder's choice. After the Bison tied it on Day's homer, James Madison went ahead for good with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. After the first two batters reached on a walk and an error, Butia touched Peacock for a two-run triple. He later scored on Nate Schill's single to make it 7-4. James Madison blew it open in the eighth, parlaying eight hits, two walks, a balk and wild pitch into nine runs. Four the hits in the inning went for extra bases, including Stoneburner's two-run triple. Travis Miller (2-0) struck out eight in six innings to pick up the win. The win was the 200th for JMU coach Spanky McFarland. Bucknell returns to action next weekend with a three-game series at Davidson. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m., with a single game following on Sunday at noon. |
