Bucknell Women's Rowing Dedicates Boat to Bill Graham
Sept. 14, 2007
LEWISBURG, Pa. - At halftime of this past Saturday's Bucknell football game against Stony Brook, the Bucknell women's rowing team took center stage as it honored 1962 alum Bill Graham by dedicating one of their boats to him. The boat, which the Bison lightweight eight rowed to the IRA National Championship this past June, now displays Graham's full name, William A. Graham IV, on its bow. The ceremony featured Graham, Bucknell University president Brian C. Mitchell and his wife, Maryjane, Judge Susan Crawford, Chair of the Board of Trustees, Bucknell director of athletics and recreation John Hardt and the Bucknell women's rowing team, led by head coach Stephen Kish, a 1992 graduate of Bucknell. As one of the largest donors to Bucknell University, a large portion of Graham's generous gifts have gone to the reestablishment of Bucknell's varsity wrestling program and the enhancement of Bison women's athletics programs. Chief among the women's athletics programs to benefit from Graham's generosity has been the women's rowing squad, which was able to apply Graham's gift toward boosting the important novice program as well as enhancing the coaching staff. Kish and the Bison have parlayed the additional resources into two straight Patriot League championships. "As an alum, it is an inspiration to see a fellow alumnus have the impact on the student-athlete experience at Bucknell that Bill Graham has had," said Kish. "It is inspirational for the women on our team to have his name on the bow of the boat. It is an honor like no other and shows the significant impact he has had on our program." In addition to the boat dedication ceremony at halftime of the football game, the women's rowing team was honored, along with women's track and field and men's golf, for winning Patriot League championships last spring. Those titles helped Bucknell earn the Presidents' Cup for the 13th time in 17 years, and that trophy was presented to Mitchell, Crawford and Hardt by Patriot League executive director Carolyn Schlie Femovich during the halftime festivities. |
