Irving "Bump" Hadley '28 Irving "Bump" Hadley '28, one of baseball's finest hurlers coming out of the bullpen, helped pitch the New York Yankees to an unprecedented four consecutive world championships from 1936-39. Hadley pitched Lynn English High to the N.E. championship in 1923 and the next year gained national prominence for striking out 26 while hurling a perfect game for Mercersburg Academy. He came to Brown in 1924, starred with a brilliant freshman team, but dropped out the next year to sign with the Senators. The chunky right hander pitched 16 years in the majors and posted a career record of 161-165 with a 4.25 ERA. With the powerful Yankees in 1936, Hadley had a 14-4 record and led American League pitchers in won-lost percentage with a .778. The curve ball artist pitched in three world series games, winning two and losing one to Carl Hubbell of the Giants. |
