Sophomore Dave Arundel (Wakefield, RI), junior Amber Knighten (Alta Loma, CA) and senior Lindsay Taylor (Boone, NC) of the Brown track and field squad are all competing in the NCAA Track and Field Championships being held from May 31-June 2 in Eugene, Oregon. Each had to attain a certain mark to qualify for the meet, and all are among the top 25 in the country in their respective events. Arundel went in to the high jump finals yesterday ranked 13th out of 20 competitors, with a qualifying mark of 2.21 meters, or 7'03.00", which he set on May 20 at the IC4A Championships. He placed 12th at the NCAA's with a height of 2.17 meters, or 7'01.50". The winner, Charles Clinger of Weber State, cleared the bar at 2.30 meters (7'06.50") to claim the national title. Knighten was an automatic NCAA qualifier in the shot put with a distance of 53'0.75", which she set at the ECAC Championships on May 20. She was ranked 10th out of 21 athletes going into the finals, and placed fifth in the event with a distance of 54'07.25", earning All-American status for the shot put. Taylor begins her competition in the heptathlon today, Friday, June 1, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern standard time. She was a provisional qualifier in the event and is ranked 21st out of 22 athletes in the competition. Today Taylor will face the 100 meter hurdles, the high jump, the shot put, and the 200 meter dash. Tomorrow she will finish the competition with the long jump, javelin throw, and 800 meter run. All events in the heptathlon should be completed by approximately 9:00 p.m. on Saturday evening.
