Glades Ferry, CT - For the sixth consecutive Region 1 show, the Brown equestrian team finished in first place, tying with Post University with 35 points on Saturday at Mystic Valley Hunt Club. The win added four more points to Bruno's Region 1 lead over Connecticut, which is now at 30. The show started off on the wrong foot for Brown, as senior co-captain Whitney Keefe (Wellesley, MA) failed to pin in Open Flat, continuing a rough stretch of luck for last season's Region 1 Cacchione Cup competitor. Freshman Allegra Aron (Burlingame, CA) got the Bears back on track with a blue ribbon in Intermediate Flat, but a sixth-place ribbon from freshman Dakota Gruener (Berkeley, CA) had Bruno sitting six points out and behind five teams. Senior Lucia Corso (New Haven, CT) had Brown's second seven-point ride in Beginner Walk Trot Canter to start the rally, followed by junior Kianuntee Murray (Jersey City, NJ) pinning second in Walk Trot. Keefe put the Bears in front with a first-place ride in Open Fences, with Gruener matching that performance in Intermediate Fences. Sophomore Emma Bogdonoff (New London, CT), who had pinned first earlier in her Intermediate Flat debut, closed the day for Brown's point riders with a sixth-place ribbon, and a blue ribbon from Post's point rider pulled them into a tie for first. Bogdonoff's one point was enough to point her out of Novice Flat, up to Intermediate, and qualify her for Regionals. The Bears got strong performances from some non-point riders as well. Freshman Elise Fishelson (Cold Spring Harbor, NY) pinned first in Open Flat in her first IHSA competition, while seniors Joyce Kwok (Hong Kong, China) and McCall Lewis (Murray, UT) took blue ribbons in Beginner Walk Trot Canter and Walk Trot, respectively. Freshman Kathryn Eng (New York, NY) also made her collegiate debut, pinning third in Advanced Walk Trot Canter. After a weekend off this week, the Bears will finish the fall season with two competitions at Windcrest Farm, one hosted by Central Connecticut State on Nov. 10 and another one week later hosted by Wesleyan.
