Women's Tennis Defeats Army For Fifth Straight Win Of Season
BOSTON, MA-The Terrier women's tennis team won five of six singles matches en route to a 5-2 win over Army at the Track and Tennis Center on Wednesday, Feb. 23, for the Terriers' fifth straight win of the season. B.U., which started out the spring season 0-2 following losses to Harvard and Columbia, is now 5-2 after impressive wins over Rutgers, Cornell, New Hampshire, Princeton, and Army. "This was a great win for us," noted head coach Lesley Sheehan. "It was a very tough match, and we had to come back after losing the doubles point. But, we came back to play great singles by winning five of the six matches." The most impressive singles play came at numbers one, two, three, and four where the Terriers won in straight sets. At number one, Laura Ahmes (Sarasota, FL) defeated Marisa Limsiaco, 7-6, 7-6, while Erin Katims (Boca Raton, FL) eliminated Christine Ong at number two, 6-3, 6-2. In the meantime, Gina Sabatino (Waltham, MA) turned aside Amy Morganstein, 6-2, 6-3, at number three. Finally, Aimee Charest (Somerset, MA) won her match at number four over Jenn Segar, 6-4, 6-4. The Terriers' other singles win came at number six where Katy Draganova (Coral Springs, FL) had a challenge before she beat Diana Alquero, 6-3, 2-6 (10-1). Army's singles' win came at number five where Amanda Paluch bested Monica Shepherd (Austin, TX), 6-2, 6-3. "We were up 3-2," said Sheehan after her team had won the numbers two, three, and four singles but lost the doubles point and the number five singles. "There were still two matches on the courts, and we needed to win at least one of them. We won both-Laura and Katy, but they were both very close matches." In doubles, Army won two of the three matches, and thus the match point. At number one, Limsiaco and Morganstein beat Ahmes and Katims, 8-3, while Segar and Megan Noble edged Sabatino and Shepherd, 8-5, at number two. The Terriers' win at doubles came at number three where Charest and Draganova beat Ong and Alquero, 8-2.
