Breznikar, Lawler Win Titles at Day Three of AE Swim/Dive Championships
BOSTON – A pair of BU athletes won individual events, as the Terriers completed the third day of the America East Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday evening. Freshman Brian Lawler was victorious in the 3-meter diving, while junior Lidija Breznikar captured the 400-yard IM. The BU men are in fourth place with 316 points, behind leader UMBC (598), Binghamton (485.50) and Stony Brook (466). Meanwhile, the Terrier women are in third place with 388 points, trailing New Hampshire (498) and UMBC (471). The championships are being held at the BU Aquatic Center, and conclude Sunday night. On the men’s side, Lawler dominated the high board, with a score of 538.55, easily topping UMBC’s Julian Acevedo, who finished second with 466.35 points. Lawler finished second to Acevedo in Thursday’s 1-meter event. BU has now had an individual win the 3-meter diving event five straight seasons, as Victor Paguia captured the event each year from 2002-05. BU was well represented in Saturday’s other events. Greg Dierksen finished fifth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:12.27, while teammate Griffin Moodie was eighth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.53. Senior captain Mike Kelly was fifth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:41.75, and the Terriers’ 400-yard medley relay squad of Jonathan Melloul, Ryan Falk, James Lands and Mike McGrath finished fourth with a time of 3:34.47. On the women’s side, Breznikar cruised to victory in the 400-yard IM in a time of 4:21.97, nearly eight seconds better than runner-up and defending champion Shirlee Manoogian of Stony Brook. Breznikar won the event for the second time in three seasons and shattered the league record, previously held by UNH’s Kristen Nardozzi (4:26.35). In other women’s events, captain Tanaz Irani finished eighth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 59.83. Senior captain Natalie Boyd was third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.52), while teammates Christina Ruggiero (1:55.80, sixth place) and Eve Kinsella (1:56.02, seventh) were not far behind. Kila Englebrook was solid in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing sixth with a time of 1:00.04, and she, along with Breznikar, Marina Morie and Boyd helped the BU 400-yard medley relay squad finish third in 3:56.41. The America East Swimming and Diving Championships conclude Sunday. Prelims start at 10 a.m. and include the 1650-freestyle, 200-backstroke, 100-freestyle, 200-breaststroke, 400-freestyle and 200-butterfly. The championships for these events will follow, starting at 5:30 p.m., and include the one-meter dive.
