Terriers Upset Fifth-Ranked Hartford In Women's Soccer, 3-0
The Terrier women's soccer team posted its most impressive win in the program's six-year history on Oct. 20 with a 3-0 win over the nation's fifth-ranked University of Hartford in West Hartford, CT. The win kept the Terriers undefeated in America East play, as they are now 7-0-0, while they are 10-6-0 overall. In the meantime, Hartford lost for only the second time this year in 14 games, while the Hawks are 5-1 in the league. Even more significant is that it ended Hartford's 39-game winning streak against conference opponents, the longest streak in the nation. It also snapped the Hawks' 10-game overall winning streak. They had not lost a game since a 2-1 defeat to Texas A&M University on September 1st. With a win like this, it would be difficult to single out just one player as the star of the game. However, consider these Terriers as potential candidates Suzanne Hudak put the Terriers on the scoreboard with what proved to be the game-winning goal at 11:06. She intercepted a Hartford clearing attempt and beat freshman goalkeeper Anne-Lise Nilssen on a one-on-one effort. Hudak, who had a number of excellent scoring chances, finished the game with eight shots. Rebecca Beyer came off the bench to put the Terriers ahead, 2-0, at 40:43, as the team went into the halftime feeling very confident. She entered the game just 20 seconds before she scored her first goal of the year. Her goal came on a header from about five yards out. Deidre Enos added icing on the cake when she received an excellent pass from Allison Merkle and scored at 55:13 on a low shot that went into the net. Last year's America East Player of the Year, Enos notched her 13th goal of the season and 44th of her career. Danielle Demers posted her fifth shutout of the season as she turned aside four Hartford shots. Terrier head coach Nancy Feldman found it impossible to single out any one player or even the four listed above as the star of the game. "I know it's a clich but this was a total team effort," said Feldman after the game. "Hudak's goal put them on their heels, and Danny (Demers) played a great game in goal. "But, this win took 11 people playing as a unit. And, that's not just the starters because when the subs came off the bench, we didn't miss a beat. Everyone stayed connected so that whoever was on the field did what they were supposed to do. "Defensively we played so well that Hartford was out of sorts. And, offensively, we had a lot of chances." The Terriers outshot the Hawks, 28-11, although Hartford had a slight edge in corner kicks, 5-4. Demers finished the game with four saves, while Nilssen had a career-high 11 saves. "We played a perfect game," said Feldman. "In fact, I was talking with some of the parents after the game and they said if people wanted to see how soccer should be played, all they have to do is see a tape of this game." The Terriers must now get ready for a match at Vermont on Oct. 22. "We have to attack the rest of the season the way we played against Hartford," said the coach. "We can't lay back if we want to beat Vermont."
