No. 10 Women’s Soccer Shuts Out UNH 2-0; Dreyer Sets New School Record
BOSTON – The 10th-ranked Boston University women’s soccer team (12-3-2, 5-0-1 AE) shut out the University of New Hampshire (5-9-0, 3-4-0 AE), 2-0, on Senior Day at Nickerson Field on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Corie Halasz scored the game-winning goal just before halftime and senior Lauren Erwin netted her fourth goal of the season in the 71st minute to lead the Terriers past the Wildcats. Senior Stephanie Dreyer broke the single season shutout record with her 11th of the season. “The Dartmouth game exposed some things we had relaxed on," said head coach Nancy Feldman. "It gave us an opportunity in practice to focus on those things these past two days. This team is confident, but they have the ability to balance that confidence with a willingness to take things in at practice.” Corie Halasz (Milford, Conn.) broke the scoreless deadlock with eight minutes remaining in the first half off a pass from junior Lauren Basham (Lake Oswego, Ore.). Basham dished it off to Halasz who had made a run forward from the backline. She collected the pass and took one touch then powered it into the lower right corner for her first collegiate point. “Corie is a great attacking player,” said Feldman. “She came to BU with the attitude that ‘I want to help the team anyway I can.’ She has played her role as a defender tremendously.” Lauren Erwin (Orange, Conn.) upped the Terriers lead to two with a shot that hit the underside of the bar and crossed the line for her fourth goal of the season at 70:59. Freshman Emily Pallotta (Andover, Mass.) was credited with the assist. “That goal meant a lot to Lauren,” said Feldman. “For her it was important to get the goal on senior day. You ask everyone on this team who the most respected player is and they will say Lauren. She’s driven, motivated and humble.” The Terriers controlled the run of play throughout the 90 minutes, and held a 12-4 advantage in shots. Stephanie Dreyer also made her mark on senior day, breaking an 11-year old school school record for shutouts in a season. Kara Lange set the record in 1995 with 10.5. Dreyer was forced to make one save when Katie Lutar’s shot made it on frame. The defense, anchored by senior co-captain Erica Lee, allowed only four shots all game and one on goal. BU returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 19 at UMBC. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m.
