Women's Soccer Defeats Fairfield For Feldman's 100th Career Win

Box Score

Katie Chen came off the bench to enjoy the first multiple-point game of her career.

Melissa Shulman and Kathleen Chen each scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Terrier women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Fairfield at Nickerson Field on Saturday, Sept. 20, to mark Nancy Feldman's 100th career win at Boston University.

Feldman, whose overall coaching record is 192-77-16, was named the Terriers' first women's varsity soccer coach in March 1995. Prior to that, she had coached at Lake Forest and Plymouth State where she had a combined record of 92-21-7 over a six-year period. Her record at B.U. is now 100-56-9.

"It is really just a number," Feldman said of her coaching milestone at B.U. "If you stay in coaching long enough, you reach these milestones.

"But, I am really happy to reach this 100th win on a night when the team has gotten back to the .500 record," said the coach.

After starting the season with back-to-back losses and then a tie before they won their first match, the Terriers are currently 3-3-1 with back-to-back wins over UMass, 5-0, on Wednesday night, September17th and Saturday night's 3-1 win over Fairfield.

It is interesting to note that the Terrier total of eight goals in the last two games represents half the total the Terriers scored last season. In 19 games last year, the Terriers scored 18 goals. With their eight goals in the past two games, the Terriers have scored 14 goals in their seven games this season.

"We showed a lot of grit and determination tonight," Feldman said after the Fairfield game. "We responded very well to taking a lot of shots and not scoring a lot of goals."

Susan Marschall opened the scoring for the Terreirs vs. Fairfield.

For the game, the Terriers, took 34 shots, 21 of which came in the first half, as they led 1-0 at the intermission. Sophomore Susan Marschall provided the lone goal when she collected a rebound and booted it home for her second goal of the season. Shulman, who was credited with an assist took the initial shot. Fairfield goalkeeper Katie Ely, who finished the game with 11 saves, tried to cover the ball up but it got loose and Marschall took advantage of it to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead at 39:04 of the match.

Shulman scored her team-leading third goal of the season at the 77:54 mark of the game when she got the ball from Chen and dribbled around Ely to put the ball into an empty net.

"Susan (Marschall) made a great play by coming up to play midfield," said Feldman. "And, then, Muggsy (Shulman) showed how effective she is with the goal she scored. She is so technical and so smart."

Chen closed out the Terriers' scoring at 82:39 when her shot from the outside beat Ely to the top right corner of the goal.

Fairfield got on the scoreboard at 84:31 thus preventing Terrier goalkeeper Jessica Clinton from posting her second straight shutout and third of the season. Megan King, who earlier in the second half had a shot hit the crossbar, beat Clinton to the side of the goal. Clinton, who has played every minute of every game this year, finished the match with three saves.

"It's nice to be sharing this milestone win this year's team," said Feldman. "Our motto this year has been 'Contribute to the Tradition.' Last year, we had a little bump in the road. This year, our players realize they have to work for everything. We are not going to get wins, just by showing up and saying we are Boston University.

"Right now, we are happy where we are," the coach continued. "I am beginning to see the little things that the team is committed to working hard.

"Actually, I began to see it in our game against Loyola Marymount," Feldman said of the 1-1 overtime tie against them on September 8. 'We responded well after losing earlier to Colorado College. Then, we showed grit when we beat George Mason (1-0 on September 12) in horrible conditions. Then came our disappointing performance against Delaware. After that game (2-1 loss on September 14), I asked myself where my team had gone.

"Now we have back-to-back wins over UMass and Fairfield and maybe we can get a streak going," the coach concluded.
