Field Hockey Will Meet Northeastern for America East Championship
America East Rookie of the Year Jane Rogers scored with 4:45 remaining in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and lead top-seeded Boston University to a 2-1 win over fourth-seeded University of Delaware in the America East Championship semifinals at Nickerson Field. The Terriers will now play third-seeded Northeastern University, a 4-2 winner over third-seeded New Hampshire.
The championship game is 1 p.m. Sunday at Nickerson Field.
Rogers' game-winning goal, her 14th goal of the season, came following a Delaware penalty corner. The Blue Hens set up with five minutes to play but were unable to control the ball at the top of the circle. The Terriers' Danielle DeCoste then sent a long clearing pass the length of the field toward the Delaware goal. Blue Hen goalkeeper Kelly Ottai appeared to have the ball controlled when Rogers dug it loose and fired a shot from 15 yards.
Delaware had taken a 1-0 lead with 9:38 remaining in the first half when Megan McGuin scored off a loose ball in front of Terrier goalkeeper Noreen Flanagan, who made one save in the first half before giving way to Susan Harrington, who stopped the only shot she faced in the second half.
The Terriers tied it with 18:19 left in the second half when Tina McDavitt converted on a penalty corner for her 11th goal of the season.
Ottai made seven saves for the Blue Hens, who close their season at 9-12. Boston University, 16-5, will make its first appearance in the America East Championship game since 1997 in search of its first conference title since 1993 when it defeated Northeastern, 1-0 at Parsons Field.
Jackie Carl scored two goals and assisted on another to lead third-seeded Northeastern University to a 4-2 win over second-seeded University of New Hampshire in the America East Championship semifinals at Nickerson Field.
The Huskies, who have now advanced to the championship game in each of the 10 seasons the conference has sponsored a championship, play top-seed Boston University Sunday at 1 p.m.. at Nickerson Field.
New Hampshire took a 1-0 lead with 31:34 left in the first half when Jessica Rusell scored with Marcie Boyer and Kristin Iarrusso assisting.
The Huskies then scored four unaswered goals. Heidi Benson started the attack with 23:57 left in the first half. Carl added the first of her two goals at 16:13 off a feed from Benson. Karen Jarvie gave Northeastern a 3-1 lead at the break when she scored with 6:48 left in the half.
