Seniors Lead Field Hockey Past Maine; Terriers Claim Top Seed for AE Championship
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Senior Amy Seaman tallied a pair of goals on Saturday afternoon to push the Boston University field hockey team past Maine, 3-0, and help the Terriers claim the America East regular-season crown for the third straight season. All three seniors played integral roles in their final regular-season contest at Jack Barry Field, as Erin Prediger earned the shutout in goal and Erin Calamari assisted on the game winner. BU's victory, combined with Albany's 3-2 overtime triumph in Vermont, allowed the Terriers to claim the top seed and home-field advantage for the America East Championships on Nov. 3 and 5. BU and Albany share the regular-season crown with identical 4-1 records in conference play, but the Terriers earn the top seed by virtue of their 2-1 overtime victory over the Great Danes on Oct. 21. With the win, the Terriers improved to 9-1 at home and finished the regular season with a 12-6 record. Maine fell to 7-10 overall with a 3-2 conference mark. Seaman made sure that Saturday's game would not be her final contest on the turf of Jack Barry Field, scoring once in each half for her first multi-goal effort of the season. Each team earned three penalty corners in the first 10 minutes of play and the Terriers used one of theirs to take an early lead. Following the initial push, the ball was sent to Calamari, who directed it towards the cage. Seaman collected the ball and sent a high-lofting shot over the defense an into the top right corner of the netting at the 9:52 mark. Junior Sarah Shute gave the Terriers a multi-goal lead heading into the break when she scored her team-leading 13th goal of the season in the 28th minute. Off a short corner, an initial shot by Calamari was stopped by Maine goalkeeper Rebecca Giroux, but the rebound kicked out to the right side, where Shute met the ball in stride and fired a 7-yard strike to the boards. Shute's goal moved her into the top 10 in BU's record book for points in both a season (32) and in a career (71). She is now tied for ninth in both categories. Seaman capped her standout effort with 7:18 to play, putting the game away with an unassisted tally. Following a scramble near the Black Bears' cage, the Terriers were close to earning a penalty stroke after the ball was trapped, but Seaman knocked the ball loose near the right post and sent it home. BU outshot Maine, 20-3, and held a 12-4 edge in penalty corners. Prediger stopped the Black Bears' lone shot on goal to pick up her sixth shutout of the season. Giroux made six saves in goal for Maine. The semifinal round of the America East Championship will take place on Friday, Nov. 3, at Jack Barry Field. The top-seeded Terriers will take on No. 4 Vermont at noon before second-seeded Albany takes on Maine, the No. 3 seed, at approximately 2:30 p.m.
